The announcement of the November 15th, 2011 release of the new Amazon tablet, the Kindle Fire, has generated lots of buzz. The tablet is nowshipping, but should you go ahead and order it?I’ve been following rumors of the Amazon tablet with great interest, and thus rushed to the Kindle Fire site as soon as it was announced. I was impressed with the specs, I considered the most obviouspros and cons, and then ended up hitting the order button. Now I am patiently waiting for theKindle Fire to arrive so that I can tell for sure if it is actually worth my $199.

1. $199 is an amazingly low price for what Kindle Fire offers.
2. Kindle Fire is capable of most things that tablets are expected to do:
   browse the web, send email, stream videos, run apps (twitter, facebook, etc.), play games, and, of course, load books, and even borrow ebooks from the library.
3. Kindle Fire lacks some premium features (camera, microphone, 3G access), so buyers be aware.
4. The tablet looks beautiful, interface is very slick, doesn’t look cheap.
5. Kindle Fire matches the competition as far as processors go (1GHz Dual Core TI).
6. The tablet’s storage capacity is lower than that of the competition, only 8GB, but Amazon is providing unlimited cloud storage, so it should be no problem.
7. Kindle Fire is a 7 inch tablet – smaller than traditional 10 inch tablets like iPad 2, so those who like bigger screens, be aware.
8. Kindle Fire is lighter than the bigger tablets (0.9 pounds vs 1.33 for iPad 2).
9. Kindle Fire runs a brand new browser, Amazon Silk, which utilizes cloud technology (and should run faster than traditional browsers), but without testing it reviewers are not sure how good it will be.
10. A lot of people who don’t own a tablet now, will buy the Kindle Fire.
11. Kindle Fire is meant for a different market segment than iPad 2, but will take some business away from Apple.
12. The Amazon tablet will not be the iPad killer because iPad 2 is still superior in terms of function, and there are plenty of tech lovers and Apple fans who want only the best.
13. Amazon will happily sell you their digital products whether you are using Kindle Fire or iPad 2.
14. Other (than Apple) tablet manufacturers will suffer greatly.

Amazon Launches Kindle Touch 3G

Amazon launched new versions of its Kindle e-reader in late 2011. It launched its first tablet – the Kindle Fire – to take onApple‘s iPad, Barnes & Noble’s Nook and other Google Android tablets in the market. It also launched an upgraded version of the original Kindle as well as the new Kindle Touch, a touch-based variant of the Kindle. Amazon competes with traditional book publishers, Apple’s iBooks, and Google Books.

The company initially launched the new Kindles only in a few markets, including the U.S., but has now has started rolling out its Kindle devices globally. This week, it announced that it will be launching the Kindle Touch 3G in more than 175 countries. The new device is now available for pre-order and will start shipping from April 27. The Kindle Touch 3G will support additional languages, offer free 3G connectivity to download books anywhere, offer Wi-Fi support and several other features to improve the user’s book reading experience.

Though the Kindle Fire hardware business is a low-margin business for Amazon, accounting for less than 3% of its overall value, we expect increased Kindle sales to drive Amazon’s core business – selling e-books and other multimedia content online, which accounts for nearly 23% of its total value. We have a $205 Trefis price estimate for Amazon, which stands 2% above its market price.
